Melina Mercouri’s bust was build in 1999 and is located in Plaka, Athens. Melina Mercouri (1895- 1967) is represented in middle age.
She was a charismatic personality and one of the most important Greek women of the 20th century. She was described as “the last Greek goddess” and a woman of flame.
She was distinguished as an actress, by playing in theatrical plays and movies that won international awards. She also left her mark as a politician with her fight against the dictatorship, but also with her interventions at international level as Minister of Culture.
She initiated the fight for the return of Parthenon Marbles back in Greece, a fight that still continues.
Today, there is also a cultural foundation in her memorial that can be found in Polignotou 11, centre of Athens.
