(1873-1950): Antonija Sternad, maiden name Acman, was born on 23 April 1873 to Gregor Acman and Lucia Acman. She was a famous midwife, the first in Šoštanj with a degree in midwifery. Antonija Sternad graduated from the midwifery school in Ljubljana on 29 July 1905, after completing a six-month course in midwifery organised by the Imperial-King’s Foundation for the Education of Midwives. She helped 3000-4000 babies into the world in homes in Šoštanj and the surrounding area. Among others, Karel Destovnik Kajuh. Antonija Sternad is remembered as a very prominent citizen. According to stories, she was “half a doctor”, as she also helped in the treatment of other illnesses. Antonija Sternad and her family lived in Šoštanj at house number 13, later at 1 Levstikova cesta.
