Lucía de Medrano
Lucía (Luisa) López de Medrano Bravo de Laguna Cienfuegos was born in Atienza (Guadalajara) on 9 August 1484. A young woman with a noble surname, she became the first female Professor in the history. Lucía took up the chair of Classical Languages in 1508 at the age of 24, replacing Antonio de Nebrija. Although some authors have doubted that a woman attained that position at such an early date, there are numerous documents that accredit the reality of her teaching, including the Sicilian humanist Lucio Marineo Siculo, who lived at the court of Castile.
