Beatriz Galindo

Beatriz Galindo, born in the city of Salamanca (1465-1535), is known above all for her reputation as a cultured woman, concerned with letters and knowledgeable in the Latin language. She began to learn grammar and Latin at a very young age, and by the age of sixteen she seems to have mastered the language to such an extent that she astonished the cloister of the University of Salamanca and they decided that she should take grammar classes in one of the schools of the University of Salamanca. Her fame spread first through Salamanca and then throughout the kingdom and she became known as the Latina. She was also fluent in Greek, and was particularly fond of Aristotle. In 1486, when she was preparing to enter the convent as a nun, she was called to court by Queen Isabella the Catholic.
