Back when Vilnius was called Wilno, this square was named after a famous Polish writer, Eliza Orzeszkowa. She lived in the city for a while and ran a successful publishing business until the Russian authorities shut it down. In her writing, you can find many topics related to feminism, like women’s education, independence, marriage, work, and the struggles of illegitimate children. In 1905, she was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature but was later overlooked in favor of another male writer.
