Helena Pimenta

Helena Pimenta is a Spanish stage director, playwright and theatre director. She was director of the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico from 2011 to 2019. In 1993 she was awarded the Premio Nacional de Teatro. She holds a degree in English and French Philology from the University of Salamanca. During her studies, she read theatre in Spanish, English and French, which would be a solid basis for her later work.
Her theatrical vocation was late and she came to it indirectly, using drama as a tool for teaching foreign languages when she was a teacher at the Koldo Mitxelena Secondary School in Rentería. The students found a meeting place around theatre, exploring different disciplines and becoming the protagonists of their own training. This is how Pimenta discovered what would become the centre of her professional and personal life. She is the first woman to head the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico (CNTC) since its foundation, and an expert in Shakespeare’s work.
