The Liberty Monument was erected in 1973 to honor the fighters of EOKA during the Cyprus Liberation Struggle of 1955-1959. It is located within the Venetian walls. The grand monument contains several statues. At the top of the structure, a statue represents the “Clocks of Freedom” above two heroic EOKA fighters opening the chains to unlock the prison gate, allowing Greek Cypriot captives, farmers, and clergy to escape from British rule. The bronze figures of men and women of different ages are vividly depicted emerging from the darkness of the prison after a long time and witnessing the light of day. The fact that the official inauguration for this monument never took place due to the tragic events of 1974 is a poignant irony. Just when the Cypriot Hellenism saw the light of the sun after a long time and was heading towards the ultimate good of freedom, the violent Turkish invasion suddenly overturned their hopes. The monument becomes a timeless symbol of struggle and hope for freedom.
