Carmen Martín Gaite
Carmen Martín Gaite (Salamanca, 8 December 1925 – Madrid, 23 July 2000). Spanish writer. She graduated in Philosophy and Arts at the University of Salamanca, where she had her first contact with the theatre, participating as an actress in several plays. In 1950 she moved to Madrid and met Ignacio Aldecoa, who introduced her to the literary circle that would come to be known as the Generation of ’55 or Post-war Generation. In 1955 he published his first work, El balneario (The Spa), for which he won the Café Gijón Prize. Two years later, he received the Nadal Prize for Entre visillos. He obtained his doctorate in 1972, presenting his thesis Usos amorosos del XVIII del XVIII en España at the University of Madrid. In 1976 he compiled his poetry in A rachas and two years later he did the same with his short stories in Cuentos completos. At the same time she works as a journalist in newspapers and magazines such as Diario16, Cuadernos hispanoamericanos, Revista de Occidente, El País, El Independiente and ABC, where she is a literary critic and translator.
