Lumina Sophie also called Surprise was a Martinican activist and poet. She was an advocate for women’s rights, education, and workers’ rights. Surprise used her poetry to address social and political issues, and she was an influential figure in the cultural and political spheres of Martinique. She spoke out against the segregation and racism that persisted in Martinique after the abolition of slavery and took part in the southern insurrection of September 1870. She was arrested a few days later. After two trials, she was sentenced to forced labour for life. After giving birth in prison, she was transferred to the penal colony of Guyana where she died on December 15th, 1879.
