Every year on February 16, we hold annual ceremonies to commemorate our independence at the House of the Signatories. Leaders of the country give speeches from the balcony, and hundreds of people fill the streets with flags, braving the cold February weather to celebrate freedom and independence. But who was this freedom for? At that time, hardly any country in the world recognized women as equal members of society with the right to vote or run for office. Lithuanian women were not satisfied with this. They raised their voices and won these rights.
