Matilde Cherner

Matilde Cherner, born in Salamanca in 1833 to a mother from Aldeadávila and a father from Cadiz, died at her home in Madrid on 15 August 1880. Matilde Cherner was one of the great writers and journalists of 19th century Spain, who had to sign her articles and books with the pseudonym Rafael Luna. She was very multifaceted and politically incorrect for her time, a republican, democrat, federalist and feminist who fought for the equality of women in her philosophy. She was a woman who was fluent in Latin and French and from her writings we can deduce that she was a cultured woman, well read and interested in music. Almost everything she wrote was published in newspapers and magazines. Her social and political commitment and her clear republicanism was a constant throughout her life, which by the way was short, 47 years.
