This building used to be a hospital founded by one of Lithuania’s first female doctors, Veronika Janulaitytė – Alseikiene (1883–1971). Her sister, Dr. Julija Janulaitytė – Matjošaitiene (1880–1978), also worked here. Despite coming from a poor family, both sisters became doctors and did a lot of charity and cultural work outside their medical practice. They also raised their daughters, Marija and Meilė, who became influential scholars.
