Female governors of Salamanca
Doña María de Aragón (1396-1445) became governor of Salamanca in 1440-1445, married to King Juan II. During these years the city, like the rest of the kingdom, was at loggerheads between the detractors and supporters of Álvaro de Luna, the King’s chief adviser. In an attempt to defuse these clashes, the King handed over the government of the city to his wife, who tried to mediate between the two sides, but her untimely death frustrated his efforts.
