First Sofia State Girls High School (now, 7th Secondary School “Sveti Sedmochiselnitsi”) & Anastasia Golovina’s Workplace

Woman in science

7 school “St. Sedmochiselnitsi” was founded in 1879 by a special decree of the Minister of Education, Marin Drinov, as the First Sofia State Girls’ High School. The history of girls’ secondary education in Bulgaria began here. Girls, eager for knowledge, arrived from all over Bulgaria – Koprivshtitsa, Kalofer, Stara Zagora, Prilep, Pirdop, Pleven, Varna, etc., which necessitated the opening of a boarding school. In 1882/1883, with the opening of a special pedagogical class, the high school reached its full development.

Dr. Anastasia Golovina (1850 – 1933) worked in the First Girls’ High School as a doctor. She was the first Bulgarian doctor who completed her education with a doctorate and the first Bulgarian female doctor. Hers were the innovations in Bulgaria related to the autopsy of the deceased to specify and confirm the cause of death. She is also the author of numerous scientific and popular science articles in the field of medicine, published in Bulgarian and foreign magazines. Throughout her life, Anastasia became the first Bulgarian psychiatrist and one of the founders of Bulgarian resort medicine and physiotherapy.
