Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”
Educational Institution
Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” is a public research university in Sofia, Bulgaria. It is the oldest institution of higher education in the country. The edifice of the university was constructed between 1924 and 1934 with the financial support of the brothers Evlogi Georgiev and Hristo Georgiev. Classes began modestly and without any noise on October 1, 1888. This is the birth date of the Bulgarian university – only 10 years after the Liberation.
The university opened its gates with just eight professors, who, although few in number and almost all of them graduated abroad, still managed to bring to Sofia the spirit of higher education from different European countries.
There were 43 students at first, only men. The first women were admitted after many years of petitions to the National Assembly, in 1901.
